What’s the difference between a Pergola and a Patio Cover?

A pergola is a term most frequently used for a stand alone exterior shade structure. Pergola’s are free standing structures (not attached to the house), commonly shading patios and walkways. A pergola is a type of gazebo that can offer shade protection as well as a place for climbing plants to vine. The height and architectural details offered by a well designed pergola can add interest to any outdoor landscape.

A patio cover is another type of shade structure; most commonly attached to a house or other structure. Patio covers can be constructed with solid roofing for a dry area or by using slats for shade. A patio cover most typically covers a solid deck, concrete or paved area next to the home. Exterior lighting, ceiling fans, and surround sound systems are additions that can be integrated into solid roof patio cover designs.
